LaB6 ceramic and cathodes

Diverse possibilities

Properties of lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6)

  • Very low work function (electron emissivity)
  • very good thermal shock resistance
  • very good electrical conductivity
  • good chemical and oxidation resistance

Applications

  • electron source
  • thermal cathode or hot cathode
  • electrically conductive ceramic
  • plasma source for plasma-supported coatings (PECVD)
Lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6) has a melting point of greater than 2400°C, a cubic crystalline structure and an extremely low electron work function of just 2.7eV. For this reason, LaB6 ceramic is used globally as a cathode in plasma-supported coating processes. We produce these cathodes with different geometries for a vast number of industrial and university applications.
